We have already reported that iPads have started to get integrated into schools and education more and more this year. A new report now showed that in fact this year, schools in the USA were buying more iPads than PCs! The report claims that the long-established reign of PC sales to US schools is coming to an end as Apple’s iPads take over the lead in the education market.

An article in TabTimes reported that in June this year, PC shipments to the education sector were down by 13.9 percent or 265,000 units from Q2 in 2011. According to a note Charles Wolf, analyst at Needham & Company sent to investors, Apple on the other hand sold nearly one million iPads to K-12 this June.

AppleInsider reported that Wolf further said in a recap on the note that this is “definitive evidence” of the iPad “cannibalizing” PC sales in the education market in the USA.

Wolf wrote, “Clearly, a significant portion of iPad sales represented an expansion of the market. But in view of the fact that Mac sales held steady at around 520,000 units but overall PC sales declined by 265,000 units from 1.90 million to 1.64 million units, we believe the inescapable conclusion is that the iPad is beginning to cannibalize a material portion of PC sales in this market.”

One of the boosts in iPad sales for education services came from the school in San Diego that spend $15 million on 26,000 iPads. In the UK, we have been catching up as well with a school in Cambridge trying out a mock exam on iPads.

Charles Wolf believes that the education market is just one of many big markets that will turn to iPads instead of PCs in the future.
