We already have reported that iPads are being used in airports and that iPad replace traditional inflight entertainment on planes. Now American Airlines has been given the green light by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to let their pilots use iPads during “all phases” of their flights.

An article in TabTimes reports that paper-bound electronic flight bags with a weight of about 35 lbs will be replaced by the iPads. Due to the reduction of weight on the plane, the move could save American Airlines a noticeable $1.2 million a year on fuel.

To start with, pilots of the airline’s commercial 777 fleet will be equipped with iPads later this month. If everything goes smoothly, American Airlines plans to extend the use of iPads for pilots to all their flights by the end of this year.

Once the airline has received this clearance, paper manuals will no longer be distributed next year, as each pilot and instructor will be equipped with an iPad instead.

American Airlines organised a custom mobile app from Jeppesen, a susidiary of Boeing. The FliteDeck Pro app, Jeppeson’s electronic flight bag (EFB) app, will be pre-loaded on the iPads.

Vice president at American Airlines John Hale said, “This is a very exciting and important milestone for all of us at American Airlines as we work to modernize our processes and best meet the needs of our people.”

He added, “With this approval from the FAA, we will be able to use iPad to fully realize the benefits of our Electronic Flight Bag program, including improving the work environment for our pilots, reducing our dependency on paper products and increasing fuel efficiency on our planes.”

The approval by FAA to use iPads in the cockpit was first received by American Airlines in 2011. Their next step is now to improve customer service on board by handing out iPads to flight attendants as well.
